About

Rocky View County regulates animals through the Animal Control Bylaw. The primary focus of this bylaw is to ensure animals are kept under control and do not engage in nuisance behaviour towards neighbouring properties.

The most frequent complaint reported to the County involves animals at large. In 2023, County Bylaw Officers addressed 1,194 instances of animals at large.

Updates to the bylaw are being considered to address these concerns. The County wants to hear from residents on the following topics:

  • Requiring dogs to be on-leash when not on their owner’s property or in a designated off-leash area.
  • Introducing licensing for cats within the County in residential areas.

All feedback will be used to support the drafting of regulations alongside:

  • The effectiveness of the new rules and regulations.
  • The flexibility of the new rules and regulations.
  • Existing resources and future requirements.

Following the engagement process, public feedback will be summarized and shared with Council, along with proposed recommendations. A what we heard report will be shared on this page.

What do you want the County to consider when updating the Animal Control Bylaw?
